Generating Production moves away from viewing technology as a universal and neutral tool, instead reconsidering technology and production through the geopolitical and historical conditions of Asia. From imperialism and colonialism, modernization and industrialization, and the Cold War and developmentalism to today’s generative AI, the publication traces how infrastructures surrounding production and technology have shaped labor, knowledge, value, and ways of life. In particular, it asks how the seemingly novel processes of “generation” are underpinned by existing systems of “production” built on data labor, computation, energy, resources, and platform economies.
Unmake Lab contributed the essay “Machine Fables” to the publication. The essay reads colonial-era taxidermy alongside contemporary machine learning, tracing similarities between the two technologies in the ways they extract, classify, and represent life. In doing so, it explores the possibility of other forms of computation and technology that attend not only to what machines learn and represent, but also to what remains unlearned or unseen.
