언메이크랩은 AI의 예측적 본성을 교란하는 서사와 합성 민속지 등을 통해 기술의 매커니즘을 오용하고 증폭해 정치적, 생태적 측면을 드러내는 작업을 한다.
특히 한국의 발전주의 역사와 기계 학습의 추출주의를 서로 겹쳐 현재의 사회, 공간 그리고 생태적 상황을 드러내는 것에 관심이 있다. 최근 작업에서는 '일반자연(Generic Nature)'이라는 지층과 그로 인한 재난의 문제를 데이터셋, 컴퓨터 비전, 생성신경망을 통해 관측하는 작업을 이어가고 있다.
기술사회를 이해하는 교육 활동과 연구를 주요한 방법론으로 삼고 있기도 하며, 포킹룸(forkingroom) 등의 활동을 통해 기술사회의 현상을 담론으로 만들고 있다.
Unmake Lab develops installations, moving-image works, and research-based projects that probe the inner workings of technological systems. Through narratives and synthetic ethnography that disrupt the predictive logic of AI, the group deliberately misuses and amplifies technical mechanisms, making visible the political and ecological structures embedded within them.
The collective is especially interested in placing Korea’s developmentalist history alongside the extractive logic of machine learning. By layering these two trajectories, they examine how present-day social, spatial, and ecological conditions are shaped by intertwined regimes of growth, data extraction, and optimization. Recent projects extend this inquiry through the concept of 'Generic Nature', understood as a geological stratum and a condition of ongoing disaster. These works observe and analyze this terrain through datasets, computer vision systems, and generative neural networks.
Education and research focused on understanding technological society form a central methodology of the group’s practice. Through initiatives such as Forking Room, Unmake Lab organizes sustained discussions and collaborative inquiry, turning the conditions and effects of technological society into shared subjects of analysis and debate.
