Unmake Lab, a Seoul-based collective comprised of two female members, Binna Choi and Sooyon Song. They turns algorithmic obsessions into irony, allegory, and a form of humor using machine perception in an unconventional manner. Specifically, they superimpose the historical context of developmentalism with the resource extraction aspect of machine learning to shed light on contemporary socio-political and ecological situations. In recent times, their narratives have been constructed upon elements such as Generic Nature, datasets, and computer vision. Besides their artistic approach, education is a fundamental component of their methodology. They actively engage in discourse and research through participation in events such as Forking Room.

 

언메이크랩은 기계의 인식 작용을 전유해 알고리즘의 집착을 아이러니, 우화, 일말의 유머로 바꾸는 작업을 한다. 특히 아시아의 발전주의 역사와 기계 학습의 추출주의를 서로 겹쳐 현재의 사회, 공간 그리고 생태적 상황을 드러내는 것에 관심이 있다.​ 기술사회를 독해하는 교육 활동과 연구를 주요한 방법론으로 삼고 있기도 하며, 그를 위해 포킹룸(forkingroom) 등의 활동에 참여하며 기술사회의 현상을 담론으로 만들고 있다. 최근 작업에서는 '일반자연(Generic Nature)'이라는 인간의 지층을 데이터셋, 컴퓨터 비전, 생성신경망을 통해 관측하는 작업을 이어가고 있다.
